THE PGA TOUR’S FIRST $1 MILLION PURSE And a driving range on the Las Vegas Strip

A driving range on the Las Vegas Strip was one of the unique highlights of the 1983 Panasonic Pro-Celebrity Classic, an event that made history by offering the first $1 MILLION PURSE in PGA TOUR history.

The tournament was a five-round, 90-hole event played across four courses: Las Vegas Country Club, Desert Inn Country Club, Dunes Country Club and Showboat Country Club, today’s Wildhorse Golf Club. Las Vegas Country Club served as the host course.

Fuzzy Zoeller started spectacularly. He shot a 9-under 63 at Showboat in the opening round despite arriving in Las Vegas only the day before and saying he hadn’t seen any of the courses.

Fuzzy Zoeller came away with the victory and recalled the significance of the tournament:

“Las Vegas, that was the first tournament that they had had in a while because they had been off the tour for a while, and then they came back with the largest purse on the PGA Tour.”
