Butch Harmon is the world’s best golf instructor, but to Harold Varner III, he is way more than that. Following a first-round 7-under par, 63, at The Las Vegas Country Club during LIV Golf Las Vegas, HVIII shared his thoughts and emotions about Harmon.
“If I’m honest with you, obviously something happened in my life, and I’ll never forget what Butch did,” Varner said. “I get there and I’m ready to hit balls, and he sat down and talked to me for two hours. I think that type of teaching (relationship) is not around. Sometimes, it’s not about hitting the golf ball. But I think he’s the best. He’s been really good. He’s a mentor to me. Obviously, he’s been a mentor to DJ, and we have had some good laughs. First thing that comes to mind is he is probably the best teacher and I’m very lucky to take lessons from him.”
Varner didn’t elaborate about when the conversation took place, but he was arrested on suspicion of DWI in December 2023. Earlier in the LIV Golf Vegas week, Varner and other pros visited the Harnom School located at Rio Secco Golf Club.

The work with Harmon proved fruitful after Varner III finished last in the Mayakoba event the week prior to Vegas.
“Obviously after last week it was good just to see some birdies go in and not many bogeys,” Varner III said. “It was good. I felt like last week was whatever, but I had no momentum, so it was good to just see something good happen.”
