Coronado Girls Golf Does the Nevada State Finals Three-Peat

We all know a dynasty when we see one, and that is exactly what the Coronado girls golf program is. The Cougars won their third straight NIAA State title in 2023 (5A) and that made it seven titles since 2014. Also, Coronado’s Ali Mulhall won the individual title.

Clark finished second as a team while Hayoung Lee (Coronado), Brynn Kort (Coronado), Amy Cho (Palo Verde), and Angelina Huang (Clark) finished runner up, five shots behind Mulhall’s 7-under par performance.

“They’re all different and they’re all special,” Sawaia said about the seven state titles. “These girls put their stamp on this season and played great together, forged good relationships, welcomed in some new players. Every year is a challenge, but they stepped up and it has been incredible. We’ve had a great run at Coronado, a lot of history of winning, and this group here  continued that.”

Mulhall took her time with the victory and let things play out in front of her.

“I stayed patient, and waited for the putts to go in at the right time,” Mulhall said. “It’s awesome. To win the team is also incredible. The entire tournament was awesome.”

Sawaia has coached a combined about 50 seasons in both boys and girls high school golf. Hoisting the trophies doesn’t get old.

“Winning is fun,” Sawaia said, who is stepping away from coaching. “This is number seven for our program since 2014. I am very proud of that. I’m proud of the girls that came before these girls and made it possible for them to keep growing and building the program. I told them after the round was over, don’t take it for granted. Winning is really hard. And when you get across the finish line, it’s always fun to enjoy it and don’t take it for granted.”

The Cougars also won the State Academic Championship.
