Taylor Montgomery’s rookie year on the PGA Tour continues to impress. His latest big moment came on Thursday when he defeated Jordan Spieth 2 and 1 to move to 2-o in the World Match Play event at Austin Country Club. The victory came over Spieth who went to the University of Texas. Montgomery played at UNLV, so a rebel went into the heart of Texas and took down a Longhorn.
“I am still shaking,” Montgomery said on Golf Channel after clinching the win with a birdie on the 17th hole. Montgomery survived a water ball bogey on the par 5 16th and fought nerves on the back nine.
Montgomery is ranked 18th in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings and is making a strong run at Rookie of the Year honors. Montgomery plays Mackenzie Hughes in the third Group Stage Match, but if the Insider’s math is correct, Montgomery is through to the knockout stage no matter the result of the third match.
