Coronado, Denunzio, Schaper Win Southern Region Girls Golf Titles

Coronado High girl’s golf coach Joe Sawaia isn’t quite sure how to determine if the 30-under par total his team recorded during the 5A Southern Region tournament at Mountain Falls is a national record or not, but he does know how good they are. Also winning individual region titles were Coronado’s Lilly Denunzio and Boulder City High’s Camryn Schaper in the 3A tourney. –By Brian Hurlburt

Denunzio, a Coronado senior, led the way at -9 to win the title by one shot over teammate Brynn Kort. Coronado players Ali Mulhall and Joanne Lee finished tied for third at -5. Nya Palmer and Hayoung Lee tied for fifth at -1. The sixth Coronado player, Ariya Soldwisch, finished tied for 12th at +5.

Coronado finished with a 546 total, which was good for 30-under par. Bishop Gorman was second at 597.

“I am very happy for our two seniors, Lilly and Joanne, and now we need to validate the win at the Southern Region with a good performance at State,” Sawaia said.

Camryn Schaper, a senior at Boulder City High, won the Southern 3A Region tournament played at Boulder City and Boulder Creek courses. She won by four shots over Abi Llewellyn of Virgin Valley.

Pahrump Valley won the team title while Boulder City was second. The 3A state event is Oct. 17-18 at Genoa Lakes in Northern Nevada.
