LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Feb. 22, 2019)–Legendary designer Tom Fazio and great golf courses go hand-in-hand. That’s a given. When you’ve got two Fazio golf courses side-by-side, now that’s really something. Welcome to Primm Valley Golf Club, home of Fazio’s Lakes and Desert layouts. –By Bill Bowman, Las Vegas Golf Insider staff.
The two courses at Primm are located 30 minutes south of Las Vegas on the California border. The courses offer stark contrasts in their looks but in typical Fazio fashion, they offer tremendous design appeal and impressive risk/reward challenges along the way. Or, as we like to call it, Fazio Flare.
“Once people play the courses, it’s easy to get them back out here,” says Dustin Flatt, general manager. “The courses speak for themselves. There are no two holes alike and there are a lot of similarities to other Fazio designed courses.”
Fazio, one of the world’s best course architects, has designed more than 200 courses worldwide and the two Primm courses fit right in his overall quality collection. Fazio also has his name on some of Vegas’ other best designs, including Shadow Creek, Wynn Las Vegas and The Summit. Primm also fits well in that conversation.
Another benefit to the Primm Valley experience is the availability of stay-and-play packages with a variety of hotel options in and around Las Vegas.

The Lakes Course is a par-71 that stretches out to 6,945 yards. The layout definitely lives up to the name as water is in play on 11 of the holes. The water features start early on the risk/reward masterpiece–the par-5 second hole. At 530-yards, the hole winds its way around a deep-blue pond. Then bunkers galore guard a large, undulating green.
The Desert Course plays 7,131 yards and is a par-72 design. The landscaping on this design offers a stark contrast to the Lakes Course, but there’s still enough water to force players to pay close attention. One of the top holes is the 204-yard, par-3 9th. The tee shot comes from an elevated tee–about a 40-foot drop– to a green guarded left by a pond (one of five water holes).
Note: don’t be scared, because while the name is Desert, Fazio summed it up nicely when he built it, saying, “This is a golf course in the desert; not a desert golf course.” Some desert course are target-oriented and very difficult. Not so with this “Desert” course.
Both of these Fazio designs will impress and challenge golfers of every skill level. The toughest test might be deciding which course to play. But, there’s an easy answer. Make an early tee time on one course, have lunch in the clubhouse and then tee it up on the other course.
“We have great pricing and we offer discounts for same-day replays,” Flatt said. “Players are basically paying a cart fee to play the second round. And they can either play the same course they played in the morning or the other course.”
