Mathis, a 20 handicap last year, is down to an 18 and knows that no matter the results, the week will be a lot of fun and a terrific break from the icy weather where he lives. Mathis loves the Vegas World Am and looks forward to it.
“I hope I play as well as I did last year,” said Mathis recently during a break from plowing snow is his hometown of Fruitport, Mich. “I probably put together the three best rounds of my life last year so hopefully I can do that again. I was consistent last year and avoided completely blowing up. I can play with the best player or the worst player, it just depends on which one of me shows up that particular day … or hole. There are several reasons why I love the event: Number one, it’s a great deal for what you get with the golf and the off-the-course dinners and parties,” said Mathis. “Number two, it’s a great getaway for those of us who live in cold areas. Number three, I think it is well organized and I like the fact that they have USGA rules officials at the event. The event is well organized and they keep sandbaggers in check and protect the field. That’s important and not all events do that. Number four is that it is a lot of fun to play with golfers from other countries and states. The camaraderie is terrific.”
The Las Vegas World Amateur is open to all golfers – men, women, young and old – with a valid USGA Handicap Index (issued by a licensed club or federation). It features six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 and under to the super seniors (70+). Within the divisions, golfers are flighted by closely grouped handicaps. The event features numerous flights and the top four finishers in each flight advance to the Championship round, an 18-hole shootout that determines the World Champion. The tournament is scheduled to be played on approximately 6 different premiere Las Vegas area courses, and each flight plays a different course each day.
